We are a nonprofit network of programs that feed, house, warm and educate people. Our joint administration provides a cost effective way to manage and develop programs to meet the needs of the communities we serve. We strive to provide families with help up and out of poverty, not just a hand out.An important service we provide to the community is the administration of state and federal funds for other local programs. Other organizations we support are included on our links page. Our funding is varied and while state and federal grants are a large portion of our budget, donations and volunteer hours are critical to our ability to bring these programs to our communities. Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA) was originally incorporated in 1965 as Southwestern Oregon Community Action Committee. In 2006, the name was changed to create greater distinction in the communities we serve. ORCCA is one of the first Community Action agencies created during the administration of Lyndon B. Johnson. ORCCA works with low-income people in Coos, Curry, and Western Douglas Counties to alleviate the effects and the causes of poverty. ORCCA also provides a number of services and activities that benefit the entire community, improving the quality of life throughout the south coast. ORCCA employs more than 150 people, with an annual budget that exceeds $7 million from a multitude of funding sources spanning several fiscal years. ORCCA’s service territory is approximately 3,800 miles, covering Coos, Curry, and western Douglas Counties. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, our territory has a combined population of 88,294. The percentage of people living in poverty in our service area is high, with a rate of 14.7% in Coos County, 12.0% in Curry County, and 16.0% in Reedsport. "He who endeavors to serve, to benefit, and improve the world, is like a swimmer, who struggles against a rapid current, in a river lashed into angry waves by the winds. Often they roar over his head, often they beat him back and baffle him. Most men yield to the stress of the current... Only here and there's the stout, strong heart and vigorous arms struggle on toward ultimate success" --Albert Pike |
