Meet Toni Espy. Toni has been involved with the South Coast Head Start program for over 17 years. She has moved from simply a parent with children enrolled in Head Start to being a volunteer, later a classroom assistant, and is now a full time Head Start teacher who affects the lives of dozens of children each year. She is Community Action!
Many years ago, Toni Espy’s husband was unable to work due to an injury and their family fell upon hard times. As Toni’s family struggled to cope with both her husband’s injury and their greatly reduced income, the Espy’s accessed the services and help provided by Oregon Coast Community Action programs. This help also led to Toni’s children being referred to ORCCA’s Head Start program for preschool education.
Toni said she loved her time as a “Head Start Mom,” and seeing the remarkable growth that her children and their friends went through. Toni was determined to give back to the program that had given her so much, and helped her family to grow. She decided to move from “Head Start Mom” to “Head Start Teacher” by enrolling at Southwestern Oregon Community College. Two years later Toni earned her diploma and began working as a substitute teacher for one of the most progressive preschool programs in the nation, Head Start.
“Inspiration is a great strength of the program,” said Toni. “It is also great to watch the way each family takes part in their child’s education.”
Toni continues her support of families in need through her ongoing dedication to Head Start and all of Oregon Coast Community Action programs. Having seen how these programs can change lives, Toni is excited to see how the organization can grow and continue to help many more families in need.
