The new facilities Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA) is building on LaClair and Thomas in Coos Bay will strengthen program integration, increase service capacity, and improve efficiency. The new facilities will include a Food Bank, and a Child and Family Resource Center with Head Start Classrooms. ORCCA’s goals to improve the community by working to strengthen programs that serve families in need led to the development of these projects, which will significantly impact the lives of local families upon it’s completion in late August of 2012.
The new facilities will house the resources to improve the health and welfare for a rural community that has been struggling economically since the 1970’s, when the timber industry began declining. We conservatively estimate that our current array of services will expand by at least 25% in the new campus, adding an additional 3,702 new clients as well as 13,693 additional clients served through new programming made possible by the campus. Additionally, we will be able to distribute 1 million more pounds of food, enabling us to provide over 650,000 more meals, the equivalent of 25 semi-trucks of food annually! More people on the South Coast will have access to food, assistance with housing, energy, and emergency needs, and educational opportunities.
ORCCA began construction on the new Food Bank in July 2011 with Coos County, and the new combined Child and Family Resource Center and Head Start Classroom building in December 2011. We anticipate the food bank being completed in May 2012, and the new Child and Family Resource Center in August 2012.
