COOS BAY, Ore. -A group of trained volunteers have strolled into the South Coast this week, already rolling up their sleeves and getting busy with Oregon Coast Community action.

Starting at the South Coast Food Share on Wednesday, ten volunteers with the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), are managing the food distribution systems, as well as packing food boxes and organizing equipment.

According to Volunteer Coordinator Madeline Enos, the Food Share assist with 33 local agencies to distribute food and the need is growing.

"It's really exciting to have them here because we're working on projects opening up a food pantry in Myrtle Point, we've been really extending our resources and so their help is really going to increase our capacity to help feed hungry families on the South Coast," said Enos.

The group of volunteers will be contributing over 400 service hours over the next week, that will help transform the warehouse and other ORCCA projects.  But Enos says the need for volunteers is vital year round.

"It's just such a pleasure to bring young, enthusiastic, motivated people to do service on the South Coast.  We look forward to doing so in the future, however there are lots of opportunities for local youth to get involved, we're going to be launching an internship program in the fall."
