The 2011 Octoberfish Festival celebrates community and raises funds for ORCCA
South Slough reserve hosted a fish printing booth
The 2011 Octoberfish festival celebrates great food, art, music and family fun, and helped raise over $2,200 to support Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA) children’s programs. The event was supported by 400 attendees, volunteers and vendors, and was held at the Old Charleston School on Saturday October 8 from noon to 7pm.
Music lovers were thrilled by performances from seven local bands including Dale Inskeep Band, Ston Soup, Sean and Marley, WE ARE GO, Che's lounge, Los Panchos, African drumming and dance by Rhythm Village, and capoeria demonstrations.
The High Tide Café provided food and drink, and the Tuna Guys served up locally caught tuna. Event highlights included children’s games, an old-fashioned apple press, a Virtual Solar Tour by SolCoast (including features on ORCCA’s solar projects), and a special disaster preparedness kit raffle prize from the Coos Bay Elks #1160. Vendors provided fun activities, information, and arts and crafts. Festival favorites included the jellyfish exhibit from Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, a Disaster Response info table from the Coos Bay Elks #1160, Fish printing with the South Slough Reserve table, and Fire Safety from the Charleston Fire Department.
North Coast Electric stepped up as the main sponsor of the 2011 Octoberfish Festival. North Coast Electric contributed $1,000 to cover the cost of food and activity supplies, and any remaining funds were donated directly to help ORCCA’s children’s
Volunteers work the old fashioned apple pressprograms. Other sponsors have supported with cash, in-kind donations, or provided discounts to the festival, including NW Natural, Pepsi-Cola, Williams Bakery, Roto-Rooter, Cash ‘n’ Carry, Port of Coos Bay and the Old Charleston school.
Oregon Coast Community Action is a non-profit network of programs that help feed, house, warm and educate the communities of the South Coast. For more information, please call (541) 888-1574 or learn more at www.orcca.us.
