COOS BAY, Ore. -Governor Ted Kulongoski is issuing a challenge to all state employees, calling on all those who work in various state offices to donate or pledge money for the Governor's Annual State Employee Food Drive.
The food drive runs through the month of February and all employees from state parks, to the employment office will be participating in one of a few ways. Some have signed up for payroll deductions and others will be hosting food drives in the community.
According to Hallie Winchell with Oregon Coast Community Action, "All kinds of state offices participate and several of them take pride in participating and trying to compete with other offices and it's all toward helping to feed our hungry neighbors, so it's all just a really great event for everybody."
The Department of Human Services will have food barrels at Wal-Mart, Albertson's and McKays Markets in Coos Bay and North Bend.
All donations will go directly to the South Coast Food Share, said Winchell. "We're seeing a big increase at the food pantry, of people coming in who are working full time but they may be the only bread winner in the household for 7 or 8 people and so they need a food box to help them get through until the next payday or something like that."
Food Share says for every one dollar donated they are able to supply seven pounds of food.
If you would like to drop off food, folks at Food Share recommend things like tuna, peanut butter, rice, beans and noodles. They add all contributions are welcome, no matter how small.
