Oregon Coast (KMTR) - Two coastal communities saw a huge increase in the number of homelessness this year.
Last year there were 539 homeless people living in Coos and Curry counties. This year that number jumped to just over 1,000 people.
Oregon Coast Community Action thinks the increase can be attributed to a more thorough count and better participation from more than 20 street teams. Most shelters and food pantries in the area also participated in the count.
Volunteer Coordinator with ORCCA, Madeline Enos, says entire families are living without a home, contributing to the high number.
"In this area there are a lot of people who have shelter, but considered technically homeless because there is not running water” said Enos. “Perhaps they are living in a small trailer that doesn't really have any amenities."
The count helps determine what kind of funding social and human services receive from the state level.
