Youth volunteers to support children, outdoor recreation and South Coast Food Share
July 9, 2010
A group of youth volunteers with the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) will be coming to the South Coast from July 13 – July 20, to work with Oregon Coast Community Action and complete projects that will help children and families in Coos, Curry and Western Douglas counties. The 12 volunteers will be working with South Coast Food Share, Great Afternoons and the Great Garden in Reedsport, and completing work for the Elkton Community Center.
Bringing a lot of enthusiasm and energy to projects that require a team of volunteers who are “Getting Things Done” in the spirit of the AmeriCorps slogan, NCCC teams work together as a group for several months and travel to different areas throughout the country to complete vital work that impacts the lives of many children and families. NCCC has helped families rebuild homes following the Hurricane Katrina disaster, and to restore natural areas through clean up and other activities, as well as many other projects that give our neighbors the chance to thrive.
On the South Coast, NCCC crew members will be working with the South Coast Food Share to help re-organize the food storage and distribution system so as to better feed the hungry children and families, and make it possible for local families to thrive. In addition, volunteers will work with the Great Afternoons and Great Gardens program by helping in the garden, building a shed for tool storage, and interacting with kids involved with the Great Afternoons summer camp. These projects will expand garden resources and make the food distribution system more efficient, making it possible for more children and families to have the food they need, and to experience the value of growing food or working in a garden environment.
Please join Oregon Coast Community Action in welcoming this crew of hard-working young men and women committed to making America and the South Coast a great place to live.
The mission of AmeriCorps NCCC is to strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct, team-based national and community service. In partnership with non-profits, both secular and faith based, local municipalities, state governments, federal government, national or state parks, Indian Tribes and schools, members complete service projects on a regional scope. AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, team-based residential program for men and women age 18–24. Drawn from the successful models of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and the U.S. military, AmeriCorps NCCC is built on the belief that civic responsibility is an inherent duty of all citizens.
Great Afternoons, an Oregon Coast Community Action program, offers a safe, caring and educational environment for children after school, in addition to infant and toddler care, a community garden and more. South Coast Food Share provides and distributes food to 33 local pantries throughout Coos and Curry counties, giving local families more than 1.9 million pounds of food through emergency food boxes or hot meals.
“The youthful enthusiasm of these very hard-working men and women will be a huge contribution to Oregon Coast Community Action programs, and we’re very excited they will be helping us to complete these vital projects,” said Mary Schoen-Clark, CEO of Oregon Coast Community Action. “Making sure children and families have the food they need or the chance for education and experiences in the garden helps to create a brighter future for South Coast families.”
Oregon Coast Community Action provides services that feed, house, warm and educate vulnerable children and families on the South Coast. To learn more call 888-1574 or visit www.orcca.us.
