Oregon Coast Community Action has joined with the Sixth Annual Oregon Tuna Classic – Reelin’ in Hunger event to provide food and funds to hungry families in southwestern Oregon. The Tuna Classic will be held on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, in Charleston. The charity event is an exciting sport fishing competition that donates the majority of Albacore tuna caught during the Charleston tournament to South Coast Food Share, the regional food bank on the South Coast, and to regional food banks in other port towns where the event is held.
The Tuna Classic will bring 200–500 sport fishers to the South Coast. Participants in the Tuna Classic will do their part to help feed the hungry on the South Coast, as well as bring an economic boost to our community. These visiting competitors will stay in local hotels, eat at local restaurants and support local businesses during the event. As a charity event, proceeds from the tournament and the seafood caught will be donated to regional food banks up and down the Oregon Coast, and benefit our hungry neighbors with excellent, high quality protein.
The Mill Casino, the Port of Coos Bay, Coos Bay – North Bend Tourism and Promotions, and other local businesses and organizations are playing a vital role in the 2010 Tuna Classic. K-DOCK will broadcast live from the docks during the event and there will be fun things to see as the boats come back with their large tuna catch! Albacore caught out of Charleston will remain in our community, going to South Coast Food Share to help hungry families.
A registered 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, the Tuna Classic has partnered with the Oregon Food Bank to fight hunger in Oregon since its inception in 2005. With events throughout the coast, the Tuna Classic provides much needed protein for hungry Oregon families. In 2009 the Tuna Classic produced over 7,300 pounds of Albacore tuna for the entire state – with the organizers making sure all fish caught in these coastal communities were donated to regional food banks that served local families. This year over 180 boats and nearly 900 people are expected to participate in the statewide competition, with Charleston serving as one of four host sites.
