South Coast Head Start Playground gets an exciting new addition!

Coos Bay, OR (July 27,2011) – South Coast Head Start will soon be starting construction on a new Coos Bay Head Start facility, and the nearby playground will be receiving a special addition, thanks to the Oregon Head Start Association. The new building will have classrooms with direct access to the playground. The highlight of the playground will no doubt be the Sea Turtle drum.

The drum will be a vital part of multi-sensory outdoor education and play for children in our program. The body of the turtle is made of wood/polymer lumber and the tone-producing surface is made of Brazilian hardwood and produces four distinct pitches.  The sea turtle drum will provide additional opportunities for outdoor play and be an important component of the Head Start playground now and in the future.

“Natural playscapes give kids an opportunity to connect with nature,” says Mary Schoen-Clark, ORCCA CEO. “I hope the turtle drum gives Head Start students fun and educational playtime and inspires the next generation of environmental stewards.”

ORCCA staff has worked closely with landscape architect Steve Schapiro and national playground consultant Nancy Chamberlain to develop plans for a natural playscape, and the new playground equipment purchases will be used in our current facilities and then transferred to our new facility once it is completed.  By purchasing this equipment now, current Head Start students have the opportunity to benefit as well.
