Making sure families have food to eat all year round is a challenge, but with the support of state employees throughout February in honor of the Governor’s State Employee Food Drive challenge, more families will have the food they need. Department of Human Services employees will host a food drive from Monday, Feb. 1 through Saturday, Feb. 6 at grocery stores in Coos Bay and North Bend.
The Governor’s State Employee Food Drive challenge in February is an annual event sponsored by the State of Oregon to increase food donations and funding contributions from state employees to local food banks throughout the state. For 2010, because of the staggering need of more food for hungry families throughout the state, Gov. Ted Kulongoski has challenged state employees to donate $144 or more to feed hungry families; or, to collect food to donate to local food banks and pantries within local communities.
Kicking off the Governor’s State Employee Food Drive on the South Coast, the Department of Human Services will sponsor a food drive at several local grocery stores throughout the first week of February.
Local community members can simply contribute to South Coast Food Share donation barrels at a variety of local grocery stores throughout the first week of February. On Saturday, Feb. 6, DHS staff will encourage community donations at each participating store and share information about hunger and services, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Donate food or funds to help feed your hungry neighbors at each donation site, including:
- Wal-Mart Supercenter: 2051 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay, Ore.
- Albertsons Grocery: 2121 Newmark Ave., North Bend, Ore.
- McKays Fresh Mart locations: 149 S. Seventh Street, Coos Bay, Ore.
State offices throughout the Coos and Curry county area will also be participating in February, through payroll contributions, fundraisers and other food drives. In 2009, the Governor’s State Employee Food Drive event brought in over $10,000 in funding to feed hungry families throughout the South Coast. This year the need for food and funding support to help hungry children and families in our region is greater than ever before.
“We salute everyone in our community that is working to help fight hunger on the South Coast, and we hope the entire region will join us in making sure no child, no grandparent, no one fights hunger alone,” said Mary Schoen-Clark, CEO of Oregon Coast Community Action.
Oregon Coast Community Action works to feed, house, warm and educate vulnerable children and families on the South Coast. To learn more, call 888-1574 or visit www.orcca.us.
