Why are handling fees necessary and where do they go?

Handling fees help to offset a portion of the costs of rent payments, utility and maintenance costs (including upkeep on the coolers and freezers), and transportation costs. The remaining operational expenses are supported by donations from corporate and foundation grants, special events, individual contributions and other sources. SCFS does not receive federal funding for its operation. Handling fees help to make the distribution of 1.2 million pounds of food every year possible.
