What is the difference between a Food Bank, Food Pantry, and an Emergency Meal Site?

E-mail Print PDF
A Food Bank solicits, collects, stores, repackages, and distributes large quantities of food to food pantries and emergency meal sites. SCFS is the regional food bank designated by Feeding America, the national network of food banks.

A Food Pantry is a member of a regional food bank like SCFS. Food pantries provide unprepared food directly to those in need who may have a place to live, but not enough to eat.  Food pantries are an important source of emergency food for the working poor.

An Emergency Meal Site is also a member of a regional food bank like SCFS. Emergency meal sites prepare food provided by SCFS into hot, nutritious meals for those in need.  For many people, the soup kitchen provides their only hot meal of the day.
