There are many reasons that people find themselves at risk of hunger. In recent years the economy has taken its toll on the working poor - those with low-paying jobs or unemployed. In the SCFS area housing costs are soaring and low-income housing is difficult to find. Utility, transportation, and health care costs also continue to increase, leaving little room in household budgets for food. These factors create a situation in which many low-income people simply do not have enough income to cover their most basic needs: food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, transportation and childcare.
