Poverty and hunger are directly related to each other. Food insecurity means that families were uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food.

13.8 percent of Oregonians (535,000 people) live at or below the poverty level. 260,000 people, including 85,800 children, receive emergency food assistance in Oregon every month and 98,000 people receive some other kind of food assistance. 33% of recipients of food aid are children.

15.1% of Americans (46.2 million people) live at or below the poverty level, including 20.7% of all children. 14.5% of households, encompassing 48.8 million people, experience food insecurity.
