SCFS defines a family as being in poverty if they earn less than 185% of the federal poverty level that is based on family size.

The official federal poverty level for a family of three is an annual household income of $18,530 (except Alaska and Hawaii).  185% of poverty for a family of three is $28,730 which is still not enough for life’s basic necessities.

The official poverty level for a family of four is an annual household income of $22,350 (except Alaska and Hawaii).  185% of poverty for a family of four is $41,348 which is still not enough for a comfortable living.
