Provides services to Head Start families in the following areas:
LITERACY
Specialist can help parents:
- Gain Adult Basic Education
- Work toward a GED
- Receive support for GED testing
- Learn about college and financial aid
- Become involved in the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Program
- Look at ways to help children learn to read
- Utilize community resources
- Learn English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Attend workshops
EMPLOYABILITY
Specialist can help parents:
- Set employment and training goals
- Address barriers to employment
- Explore career options
- Choose and access career training
- Improve job search and interview skills
- Utilize community resources
- Develop a resume
- Participate in Head Start's Training and Practicum (TAP) Program
- Attend workshops
PREVENTION
Specialist can help parents:
- By supporting long-term prevention efforts
- Increase awareness of the health consequences associated with alcohol and other drug use
- Learn how to recognize the signs of substance abuse
- Access treatment services
- Gain support in the recovery process
- Participate in community prevention groups
- Attend workshops and parenting classes
FAMILY RESOURCE ROOM
- Family Service Center Workshop site
- Work site for individual skill building, study and self-improvement
- Free pamphlets and brochures
- Lending Library including video and audio cassettes
- Video and audio recorders for use on-site
- Computer available
- Telephone available for local use
Family Service Center Specialists network with community agencies to provide workshops and other services related to their specialty area. Workshops may be presented at local Head Start sites upon parent request.
The goal of the Family Service Center is to increase self-sufficiency within Head Start families who may have needs in the areas of literacy, employability, and/or chemical health. Specialists in each of these areas assist parents in defining and achieving their personal goals.
To utilize the services, Head Start parents may call the Family Service Center Specialists directly. Parents may also request services through Head Start staff members.
No Head Start parent shall be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or otherwise be discriminated against under this program.
