Shopping Cart Distribution
We still have eight shopping carts that we are looking to distribute to the network. These are donations from Wal*mart and are in good condition. They would be useful to any pantry that needs help moving the heavy sacks or boxes of food that you receive. If you happen to run a shopping style pantry they can be used by clients as they pick out their food; even if you don’t run that kind of pantry they can be used by clients to transport food to their vehicles. If you’re interested in having one or more of these shopping carts please contact Morgan Filbert at mfilbert (at) orcca (dot) us or 541-888-7297.
Network Standards
We’ve recently learned that one of our Agencies had an incident of volunteers being rewarded with special access to food. We thought it might be a good idea to remind everyone about the policy on that.
Oregon Food Bank receives support from local government and generous donations for corporate sources because of its high standards and commitment to service. Donors know that their gift will be used in accordance with the law and with their wishes. Every so often I get questions about how donated food products can be used. Recently there was some confusion about the use of donated foods to reward volunteers. It is very important that food products never be used as "payment" to volunteers, or is distributed to non-eligible agency staff.
This is discussed in the Oregon Food Bank Gray Area Report 1991
" The practice of thanking volunteers with a "gift" of product that was donated for charitable use is contrary to both labor law and tax law. If a volunteer has an understanding or a justified expectation concerning a regularly received bag of groceries in exchange for or as a consequence of his or her labor, such gratuities can be construed as being wages, elevating the volunteer to an "employee" status and bringing into play all labor law requirements while at the same time disallowing the donor's claim of a charitable deduction for the inventory in question on the company's tax return. This would be true even if the Affiliate or agency had a written disclaimer policy stating that any gifts of donated property made are gratuitous in nature, are not in exchange for the services provided, and are not to be "expected" by the volunteer. If the practices of the Affiliate or agency are such that the gratuity can justifiably be expected based on past history, the practice is not acceptable."
Cooking Demonstrations!
This summer, educators from OSU Extension are offering to conduct cooking demonstrations at any LA that wants one. The demonstration will happen during your distribution hours, and will include a demonstration, recipe hand-outs you can give to your clients, and samples of the recipe for you and your clients.
To make these demonstrations run smoothly, we need to know what your kitchen facilities are like. Please fill out the following survey and send it back to us by fax or email.
