In spring 2009, Margaret Partner's 3rd grade class at Mytle Crest Elementary piloted the Toy Tales classroom writing exercise. After learning about helping their neighbors, each child went home to choose a toy they would donate to the Toy Tales fundraiser. However, before donating the toy, they wrote a story about an adventure they went on with their toy. The students went through the multi-step writing process, from brainstorming to creating a rough draft to writing the final story, complete with an illustration. Here are a few examples from that class. Enjoy!

This toy is a fake candy cane. This cane grew from the ground in my backyard. The cane and I boinged to the moon. We saw an evil Martian. The Martian and I had a sword fight, and the cane was my sword. The cane and I won the fight! Then my cane turned into a big, giant, red, white, and green…cane rocket ship. The cane rocket ship and me flew back to Earth at U.S.A. OR, Myrtle Point. The toy cane changed my life because I finally went to the moon.

By Heath This toy is a ninja turtle I got for my birthday. We went to California. We went to Disney World. We went on the scariest ride in the park. It had lots of loops and twirls. We got dizzy. Then we went to Sea World. We went to swim with the dolphins. Next we went to a pool. Leonardo couldn’t swim, so I saved him. Finally, we went to Lego Land. We drove a cart, and Leonardo spun out. Finally, we went to Sea World again. We swam with whales. Leonardo took swimming lessons. When I got older, I was too big to play with Leonardo. My dad bought me a live turtle. I named it Fasty.

This toy is a baby doll with pink overalls and blue eyes and beautiful lips, too. How I got her, well, she fell from the sky. I know it sounds crazy, but it happened! It all started on a sunny Saturday. I was swimming, and I was three, at Loon Lake. SPLASH! She fell from the sky. Nobody saw it but me. I took it everywhere with me. Even to pre-preschool. One day I took it to the park. It got muddy, so Mommy had to wash it. When she came out, her head was off! I cried for days. I got through grade school and high school. Before you knew it, I was an adult. I got a job. Then I remembered the baby doll. How I wanted a real baby. Then I got married and had two girls: twins. A happy ending, huh.
