The ongoing federal government shutdown continues with no clear end in sight — and its effects will ripple through every corner of our South Coast community if it continues beyond October 31. Critical nutrition programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) may soon be disrupted, threatening the ability of thousands of Coos and Curry County residents to afford groceries.

These programs are the backbone of food security for many families across our region:

  • More than 68,000 people in Coos and Curry Counties rely on SNAP each month to help fill their grocery carts.

  • Thousands more women, infants, and children depend on WIC for essential nutrition that supports healthy growth and development.

If benefits are delayed or halted, it won’t take long for the impact to be felt. Families already struggling to make ends meet will run out of food before their next paycheck. Older adults and people with disabilities may have to choose between buying groceries, paying rent, or filling prescriptions. Local food banks — already stretched thin — will see even more people coming through their doors.

At South Coast Food Share, a program of Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA), we are doing everything we can to prepare. We’re working closely with food pantries, Head Start sites, and community partners to ensure food remains available for everyone who needs it. But we cannot do this alone.

That’s why we’re launching the Stand in the Gap Fundraiser, to raise $100,000 by December 31 — enough to provide 300,000 meals to families in Coos and Curry Counties who may lose access to SNAP or WIC during the shutdown.

Stand in the Gap:
Feeding South Coast Families Through the Shutdown

Together, We Stand in the Gap!

Here on Oregon’s South Coast, we take care of one another. We’ve weathered storms, wildfires, and economic hardship together — and we’ll get through this, too.

Whether you can give $5 or $500, your support makes an immediate, local impact. Every gift fills plates, lifts spirits, and reminds families that their community stands with them.Let’s make sure no one in Coos or Curry County goes hungry this winter.

How Your Donation Helps

Every contribution, large or small, helps put food on the table for someone right here on the South Coast:

  • $1 = 3 meals for local families

  • $10 = 30 meals

  • $50 = 150 meals

  • $100 = 300 meals

  • $500 = 1,500 meals

  • $1,000 = 3,000 meals

Financial gifts allow us to purchase staple foods in bulk, deliver to local pantries, and stock our Fresh Choice Market, ensuring that when families walk through our doors, food is waiting for them.

Every pound of food we distribute — 3.9 pounds per $1 raised — stays within our local network, serving Coos and Curry residents. Your generosity directly supports your neighbors, coworkers, and classmates.
