Program Update 08/18/2020

For the upcoming school year, South Coast Head Start will open center-based services in two waves. Our Child & Family Resource Center in Coos Bay will begin most Head Start and Early Head Start classes on September 1st. Teachers are currently reaching out to accepted families to complete enrollment. Remaining classes, including those in outlying areas, are scheduled to begin September 29th, with Teachers reaching out to accepted families beginning the week of 9/14.

Your child’s health and safety are important to us! In our classrooms, staff will continue to provide developmentally appropriate activities that incorporate strategies to ensure health and safety while also promoting positive social-emotional development. This includes increased outdoor activities, increased distance between table work activities, and increased individual supplies for each child. Teachers will also incorporate fun and engaging activities related to hand washing and illness prevention into their lesson plans. All classroom meals will be provided “restaurant-style”.

SCHS is currently limiting class sizes as a strategy to reduce potential COVID-19 exposure among children, families, and staff.  In addition to our classroom services, we will offer remote early learning and family services to approximately 90 children and families through our Child and Family Advocates. Children enrolled in this option may transition to center-based services as space becomes available or class sizes are increased. We will also continue to offer our Early Head Start Home-based program option remotely until in-person services can resume.

Although programming has some temporary changes, South Coast Head Start is open and dedicated to providing child and family resources that can help your family be school ready! We continue to focus on providing quality services for children and families with the highest needs. Program options and times vary by community. Please contact us at (541) 888-3717 to find out community-specific options.
